DIY Felted Garland

A felted garland is a fun and easy way to personalize your decor for an upcoming event. My sister asked if she could have her college graduation party [Go Rams] at our house so I wanted to pull together some green and gold decorations to celebrate.

Any 100% wool will felt, this is why you wouldn’t want to wash a wool sweater. When wool felts, the fibers open up and merge together to become a more dense solid object. Knitters will often felt bags or slippers on purpose.

In this case, I started with 100% wool roving in Colorado State colors. The packages themselves are fairly affordable and I only needed one of each color to make more than enough balls to string onto the garland.

Once you have the roving you need hot water and soap to start the felting process.

How make a felted garland

Step 1

Tear off small pieces of roving from the larger package. The roving feels a bit like cotton candy and you want about 2″ of roving for each ball. Place the roving into the hot water.

Step 2

Using your hands, begin to roll the roving into a ball. Wool felts with a combination of heat and pressure, so moving your hands together rapidly will help keep the roving together.

Step 3

Once each piece of roving begins to look like a ball, set it aside to dry. Roving may not be color treated so make sure that you are setting the drying balls on a towel that you are ok with throwing out if the dye starts to bleed.

Step 4

Once everything is dry thread a tapestry needle with thread. I used size 10 crochet cotton string. Push the needle through each ball and space them out for as long as you want your garland to hang.

I completely forgot to take a photo of the finished garland hanging, but I really liked how it turned out. If I find a photo, I’ll add it to this post but you get the idea. 🙂
