One of the fun – and overwhelming – challenges of a new home is getting to add personal touches to each room. Luckily for us every room in our home needs to be painted so there will be no shortage of personalization that happens as we work our way throughout the home.
I opted to start small. Our living room has a 2 story vaulted ceiling and I’m not quite ready to take on that massive project so I decided to start in what happens to be both the smallest and most difficult room in the house to paint – the Powder Room.
Like any Pinterest loving woman, I decorated that room long before we found the house, or moved in. Lucky for me, we actually ended up with a house with a powder room since I had set my heart on the inspiration for the entire style of the room nearly 4 months prior to our closing.
Ninety percent of the walls in our house are white; the perfect blank slate for painting. Unfortunately the room I decided to tackle is one of 2 rooms with not only a really pleasant paint color, but also the ceiling painted to match.
I headed over to my neighborhood Sherwin-Williams to ask their advice and recommendations on how to get started with the project. Their in-house team of paint experts were amazing to work with and walked me through all the details I needed to give our bathroom a fresh face. They even offered to provide a free in-home consult to help pick colors for the rest of our home. I’ll definitely ask them to walk us through that process when we are ready for the larger rooms in the house.
I started by painting the ceiling with Sherwin-Williams matte Eminence High Performance Ceiling Paint. It went on easy with just 1 coat and was perfect for touching up all the drips the last homeowner left on the molding and trim.
Once the ceiling had dried for a couple of days I used painter’s tape to mark off the trim and began a coat of my new bathroom color, Commodore, from Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Paint line. There are a lot of paint types to choose from and Emerald is by far the best for covering up old colors and stains. Emerald is both a primer and paint, saving time in the painting process and contains anti-microbial agents that prevent mildew making it the perfect option for a bathroom.
The paint initially went on close to a royal blue, but as it dried became darker and perfectly matched the towels I ordered nearly one year ago today. The white trim really pops against the blue and Drew might sneak in and “improve” the decor with some Michigan gear when I’m not looking.
My next task was to add a tiled border that matches the pattern on the towels. I had thought that I could do this using a stencil that I created on my silhouette.
Fun fact, stencils and textured walls are not a good combination. Due to the texture of the wall, the paint could get underneath the stencil. I still wanted to add a border, but decided to take a different route and make the border out of vinyl instead of painting.
This was the hardest room in the entire world to photograph. Its a total of 4 feet wide by 5 feet long and no matter what I did, I could not capture a good shot of the entire room. I did snap this panorama that looks pretty awesome and shows off the border.
There are still few finishing touches (new mirror and shelf above the toilet) to completely wrap up the bathroom project, but I’m really happy with how it looks. The blue is perfect, and I’m so excited that Sherwin-Williams helped me bring this project to life.
Disclosure: I received paint from Sherwin-Williams as compensation for this post. All views and options expressed in this post are my own and no additional compensation was provided.
