Growing up in Colorado the annual school field trip to the Denver Zoo was something we all looked forward to. Since moving back to the state I’m not sure when the last time I visited the Zoo was, probably at least 10 years. I’ve been working to improve my photography skills so I was so excited when my Mother in Law gave me a Mike’s Camera class as a gift for my birthday last month.
We spent an evening learning about ISO, F Stops and what types of settings we should use for long range photography and several weeks later the class headed to the Zoo for an early morning with the animals. With the beautiful morning light capturing all the outside animals was a bit easier, so to give us a challenge we also spend an hour or so inside the reptile house to try out low light photography.
Before heading out staff from the Zoo shared a private animal show bringing out hawks, parrots and cockatoos for us to photograph up close and personal. It was a beautiful day to be outside and I am really proud of how the images came out. Drew and I both ended up at the Zoo day so some of these photos are his – I’m not sure which are which at this point!

July 6, 2016 at 12:25 pmThank you Michael! The lizards and tree frogs were behind glass. Part of the lessons learned in the class I took was how to adjust aperture to remove glare from glass or shoot through a fence. I just kept adjusting the aperture till the subject was in full focus!
