Giving back to the community is something that’s important to me and when I found out about Chase’s sponsorship with the AARP Foundation I was excited to learn more and share this amazing program.

Chase has worked with AARP for 27 years and has donated over 8 million dollars toward ending senior hunger. This year, for every purchase made at a restaurant with the AARP Credit Card from Chase, $.10 will be donated to the AARP Foundation [up to $1M]. In addition to giving back, cardmembers are able to benefit by selecting from cash back, gift cards, travel or even credit towards an AARP membership of their own.

As part of their support to the AARP Foundation, Chase is a sponsor for the Summer of Service to Seniors, working alongside the AARP Foundation and local community organizations to fight food insecurity in communities throughout the country. Recently nearly 1,500 volunteers converged on Magness Arena to carefully assemble and pack wholesome meals to distribute to seniors in need throughout the Denver Metro area. 

Denver Works To End Senior Hunger

In the first event that took place in Memphis, volunteers packed 500,000 meals to help end senior hunger. In Denver, volunteers packed an additional 503,000 meals. Volunteers each served for 90 minute shifts, donning hairnets and aprons to package rice, lentils, seasonings and freeze-dried vegetables into ready to cook meal kits. As boxes were filled, cowbells rang out to signal another set of 288 meals ready to be palletized and wrapped before delivery to the Food Bank of the Rockies and Denver Indian Center for immediate distribution to Denver seniors in need. Following the Denver event, an additional 500,000 meals were packed at the Minneapolis – St. Paul event, further contributing to the 3 million goal.

I had the chance to chat briefly with AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson, whose infectious enthusiasm cheered on volunteers as they worked through hundreds of pounds of supplies. “Denver has a spirit of service and is known as the baby boomer capital of the U.S.” she said, “So many older adults who slip into poverty may not be asking for the help they need. Today is a day to look out for all our neighbors.”

In addition to seeking out volunteer opportunities like the Summer of Service, Ryerson encouraged participants to reach out to their neighbors and offer to lend a helping hand. In addition to the meal pack events, AARP Foundation works year-round to increase economic opportunities and social connections that help prevent and reduce senior poverty.

Following the packing shift, volunteers were invited to participate in a dance party and community affair outside, where AARP volunteers shared information about the many programs and services available to seniors throughout the country. The outdoor venue thanked the AARP Credit Card from Chase and other sponsors for the support of this event.
